The Bad Thing About Love

Assertion: The badest thing about love is that from the constitution of the civic individual it is alway greater then he or she.

I.H. as E.B.

Clarifications: He or she in a civic person means his or her ego-structure. Ego is used in the sense S. Freud used to use it. If it is not greater than the ego, be assured it is not love what the person feels and thinks but at most a kind of simulacron of it.

The writer of ....

Illustration: This painful ratio and the complication it induces are the reasons why the civic individual in the 500 years of its existence had such eminent troubles with love, and especially love for a member of a different gender. The fact has been beautifully exemplified and explored in the best of novels, e.g. "Madame Bovary", "La Chartreuse de Parme", "Анна Каренина", "Wuthering Heights", "Le Ravissement de Lol V. Stein", "Доктор Живаго", "Die Marquise von O…" and other lesser works as well as so called love songs and love movies uncounted. As a nice example of the later genre we recommend 臥虎藏龍 (Wòhǔ Cánglóng), which you might know under the title of "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and which of course is no Wuxia movie as wikipedia claims but a modern love movie by two of the today's masters of the dying art of narrating failed romances.

Consequences: If you are able to admit and enjoy love then you know you have already transgressed the world of civilization. On the other hand, if you insist on holding on to your maximum of civic independence of the ego, you cannot have arrived at love quite yet.

I always considered society (aka the others) as the biggest obstacle for l.o.v.e., not one’s ego alone.

Aren’t we all just one big Genius of Love, anyway?

Well

That is a good argument and not to be underestimated. I was convinced a malevolent or rigid social environment (the others) posed the largest obstacle to love for the longest time in my life.

Let me expose what is my conjecture now: Beside the possibility of a slightly malevolent universe, 2 further things are to be considered.

  • The social values and world models your environment sported while you where still impressive are deep inside you and it is not very healthy to try to fully remove them.
  • From the time, when your done with self-reconstruction and peer and self-oriented secondary socialisation you might have a rather well put together self-universe interaction model that governs your social actions, feelings, misgivings, possibilities for spontaneous fits of likes and dislikes and so on and on.

This model must satisfy certain structural requirements and limits. And the model in a way is your universe and not just a representation of it.

The civic (or bourgeois as the self appointed revolutionaries say) selfmodel demands that nothing is bigger or more important than the individual ego structure. Hence the entrepreneur, hence the abolition or at least disempowerment of kings and gods. In this model even patriotism, the abstracted substitute for loving one's larger family or tribe, is reserved for farmers, workers, military officers and other not quite civilized persons.

And, if that weren't enough, any cross gender love is further complicated by a series of culture shocks and wariness on both sides that has been nurtured for at least the past 3000 years.

Still, all of that is not the point. The point is to experience love and so to really know that it is already possible transgress civilization's boring borders and continue to do so. The corresponding transgressions, done properly, are helpful in the long time survival of our selfs. At least, that is what my main prophet, Bento Espinoza, would confirm, methinks.
