Goldige Lieder #2

Im Girlscamp wurde vor kurzem schon auf die Darbietung goldiger Lieder durch unseren Chor am 25. Juni d.J. um 11:30 in den Ehrbarsäälen hingewiesen. Der goldigsten Lieder eines aus unserem Repertoire nennt sich Jerusalem of Gold oder hebräisch "ירושלים של זהב" von Naomi Shemer in einem wunderschönen Arrangement von Gil Aldema.

In 1968, Ha'aretz reported "that then MK Uri Avnery had presented a bill to the Knesset Speaker, proposing that Naomi Shemer's Jerusalem of Gold be anointed the country's anthem". "Avnery spoke with Shemer," the article said, "and she informed him that she did not oppose the proposed law, and that its acceptance would be an honor for her."

Thirty-four years later, Avnery still believes that "Jerusalem of Gold" could serve as an excellent national anthem, instead of "Hatikvah".

Uri Avnery adamantly believes that "Jerusalem of Gold" is a hymn worthy of all citizens of the state. He explains: "My position then was essentially a protest against "Hatikvah". I wanted to propose an alternative song that had a chance of being accepted. I still think that "Hatikvah" is appropriate neither for the Hebrew population nor the Arab public in Israel. It is a song about the yearning for Zion, about homesick longing, and it doesn't deal with life in this country. "Hatikvah" also separates Jews from the rest of the citizens of Israel.

Song of peace, song of war

Schon kurz nach der Entstehung gab es eine Debatte, ob dieses Lied nicht einem baskischen Volkslied sehr ähnlich klinge. Die extreme Popularität von "Yerushalayim Shel Zahav" während und nach des 6-Tage-Krieges beendete diese jedoch. Nach ihrem Tod im Jahr 2004 schockierten Shemer und Aldema einen beträchtlichen Teil der Fans mit der auf dem Totenbett verfassten brieflichen Aussage, das Lied hätte wohl doch "Pello Joxepe" viel zu verdanken. Shemer hatte nachgewiesenermaßen das baskische Original bei einem Konzert gehört.
