What Lifted Jobs And Gates Out Of Their 8-bit Misery

This is what is. A commercial. In 1979 Xerox introduced its vision for the office of the future. Years ahead of its time, the 1972 Xerox Alto featured Ethernet networking, a full page display, a mouse, laser printing, e-mail, and a windows and graphics-based user interface. Although it's high price limited sales, the Alto was a groundbreaking invention. Most everything about the computing (interactive access visual and aural interface) and networking revolution (send around the office or around the world) that was going to come was knowable 40 years ago - for interested and attentive experts and everybody who watched commercials.

Nearly all Computing History Books discuss the dispute between Gates and Jobs or rather their respective companies on who went to PARC first and how secret all of it was. It was not. Xerox gave Smalltalk to a couple of other computer companies to implement, did commercials for its future products and gave demos to a lot more people than only Jobs and Gates. Ads for the Xerox Star also came long before the famous Mac introduction ad.

We do not know if the communication departements of MSFT and AAPL who by their publications had a huge influence on PC history, created the impression by intent or by ignorance. It does not matter too much either. Any which way it is the task of later historians to uncover or recover the best possible approximation of truth.

And - it should be the task of decision-makers in the industry, the media and politics to know that history a lot better than they do to inform their perspective and the settings they implement by laws, regulations and business strategies.

Mein Schatzi und ich waren gestern in der Arena, bei einem Konzert von Franz-Josef Hagmanns-Dajka, genannt Funny van Dannen. Ich kann mit Fug und Recht sagen, das Konzert war ganz wunderbar und vor allem eine gefühlsmäßige, aber auch ausreichend gedankenmäßige Erquickung. So gut, dass wir beide beim Nachhausefahren gleich 2 mal falsch umgestiegen sind, so begeistert waren wir.

Van Dannen spielte eineinhalb Stunden und als Zugaben-Set noch eine dreiviertel Stunde dazu die Songs aus dem aktuellen Album "Alles gut, Motherfucker" aber auch eine wohl-ausgewählte Reihe seiner "Hits" aus den letzten mehr als 20 Jahren.

Als Beispiele gehören da jedenfalls "Gutes Tun", "Saufen" und "Freundinnen müsste man sein". So was finde ich ja die beste Mischung für Konzert-Tourneen. Ich habe van Dannen auch hoch angerechnet, dass er dem Publikum und seinen Flow-Energien elegant widerstanden hat und "Kapitalismus" so antihymnisch, wie es nur ging, gesungen und gespielt hat. Da vorne waren eh schon alle so richtig beim Schunkeln.

Und nach den gut mehr als 2 Stunden und mehr als 10 Zugaben, war das verwöhnte Publikum leider in einer Gier-Stimmung, dass viele ihn nicht gehen lassen wollten und nochmal "Zugabe" schrien, obwohl jede/r dort vorgeblich mit dem Humanismus und der Freundlichkeit seiner Texte voll einverstanden war. War aber der einzige Wermutstropfen des ganzen Abends.

2009 stand hier zum ersten Mal ein Zitat von Hagmanns-Dajka aus "Gutes Tun". Vor 2 Wochen, anlässlich der Folge der "Ö1 Gedanken" mit ihm, die ja wohl durch das besprochene Konzert veranlasst war, brachten wir seine Songs über "Kapitalismus" und "Schilddrüsenunterfunktion".

Die neuen Songs, die wir noch nicht kannten, waren teilweise eine Herausforderung, weil die 2 Mixer zwar einen sehr okayen Klang zusammengebracht aber dabei nicht genug auf Sprachverständlichkeit der Stimme geachtet hatten. Ist bei vielen Konzerten wurscht, aber bei Herrn van Dannen eben ganz und gar nicht, machte es aber auch spannend. Zum Glück gab es von van Dannen zwischendurch auch Mitsinglieder, bei denen niemand Vorsicht walten lassen muss.

Jedenfalls eines der schönsten davon trägt den Titel Nebelmaschine

Man schaut in die hellen Schwaden, fasziniert vom wolkigen Schweben, und man vergisst sich selbst dabei und fast das ganze Leben. Es ist schon erstaunlich, wie einfach man glücklich werden kann. Und wenn sowieso alles klar ist, schmeiß die Nebelmaschine an.

Es wurde ein sehr schöner Abend, sogar ohne Sex. Wir saßen zusammen im Nebel und tranken einen Kasten Bier. Das ist endlich mal eine Freizeitidee, die ich wirklich empfehlen kann. Also wenn ihr mal richtig entspannen wollt, schmeißt die Nebelmaschine an!

Great Jewish Songs: An Overview

This is an overview of our comments on great Jewish songs and lyrics some of which belong to the romantic repertoire of Jewish standards. For quite some songs lots of people know that the author/s was/were/is/are Jews but there are also quite some were not that many human beings we know, know that they have deep roots in Jewish Culture.

As can be easily glimpsed from the selection we are great fans of songs that Jews wrote for or that have been taken up by African-American artists (formerly called either black or negro singers). Also, in the youth of quite a few of our illustrious editorial staff Viennese Jewish Music played a hard to overestimate role.

As to the languages, many of these are in English, some are in German, and even the oddball Yiddish example can be heard and understood if one really wants to. Up till now there's one in French and one in Hebrew. Ladino songs are to follow but have not yet made it into these pages.

Due to the inner nature of blogging software, articles get posted nicely for daily reading and not so nicely for leisurely sunday afternoon archive browsing. So here's a little implement to make it easier for the p.t. audience to re-read and re-hear.

This is the second installment on Tom Lehrer and rightly so because along with Shel Silverstein and with more hilarious ones to his credit he is one of the funniest Jewish English language poets and a brilliant cabaret piano player on top of that.

That Was the Year That Was is a 1965 live album recorded at the hungry i in San Francisco, containing performances by Tom Lehrer of topical songs he had written for the NBC television series with that name, known informally as TW3. All of the album's songs are related to items in the news of 1964 and 1965. Some things like pollution take long to have effects in nature and also long to become known to all of society in the remote provinces of the empire.

What climate change is today pollution was in the 60ies and 70ies. While its easily perceivable effects in Western cities have largely been elimintated by national states and international contracts and projects, its long term and far away effects still wreak a lot of havoc in large waters and air. That is also how we can connect this song to today's Swedish girls' activities.
