Sudit's journal, which was published in a limited number of copies only, came into the possession of the Israel correspondent for the German daily, the Frankfurter Allgemeine. Excerpts from the diary passed on to Haaretz reveal that Begin knew of the plans to assassinate Adenauer, and even initiated meetings to promote the operation. Among other things, Sudit writes that he heard Begin had offered to sell his gold watch to pay for the hit after the operation ran into financial difficulties.

An era of depression, hope too

In continuation of my obsession of pointing to the historically most interesting articles in the English language Israeli press, I want to hint you to this most interesting extended book review of "Menachem Begin: Portrait of a Leader" (Resling Publishing; in Hebrew) by one Dr. Ofer Grosbard. The article is by Dalia Karpel and goes by the title of The depression era. As there are not many among you and us that will be able to read this book in Hebrew and as the topic and results of it are so intimately Israeli-Jewish that a translation will surely be slow to come, don't miss this.

2 Illustrationen des angelsächsisch intellektuellen Vorkriegskatholizismus

Tolkiens erste Publikation "The Hobbit" erschien im englischen Buchhandel im Jahre 1936. Ein deutscher Verlag konaktierte XX und war daran interessiert eine deutsche Übersetzung zu erstellen und aufzulegen. Der Schönheitsfehler dabei war, dass Tolkien dazu nach der gerade aktuellen Gesetzeslage einen Rassereinheitsnachweis vulgo Ariernachweis erbringen hätte müssen. Er beschied den deutschen Verlag mit den folgenden Worten über seinen mangelnden Willen und seine mangelnde Fähigkeit, dies zu erfüllen:

"Thank you for your letter.... I regret that I am not clear as to what you intend, I am not of Aryan extraction: that is Indo-Iranian; as far as I am aware none of my ancestors spoke Hindustani, Persian, Gypsy or any related dialects. But if I am to understand that you are inquiring whether I am of Jewish origin, I can only reply that I regret that I appear to have no ancestors of that gifted people...."

Why Iraq Will End as Vietnam Did

Apropos spielen: Martin van Creveld, mein gerade wieder einmal Lieblingshistoriker hat die sinnlosen Spielereien eines Exalkoholikers und seiner frustierten Mitspieler untersucht und kommentiert.

Im englischen Teil des פֿאָרװערטס (Forverts) erscheinen regelmäßig Artikel dieses klugen Mannes. Der, den ich hier meine, heißt "Costly Withdrawal Is the Price To Be Paid for a Foolish War" Einer der Schlüsse, die dort gezogen werden, ist, dass Bush jr. einem Impeachment - Verfahren unterzogen gehört.

Lew Rockwells "anti-state, anti-war, pro-market" blog hat am 18.11. 2004 eine längere Analyse veröffentlicht, nämlich "Why Iraq Will End as Vietnam Did". In dieser Geschichte versucht der Autor "to address the differences and the similarities between the two wars by describing Vietnam as it was experienced by one man, Moshe Dayan".

Definitely recommended. Auch die beiden Publikationen, für mich speziell der "פֿאָרװערטס", auch wegen seines jiddischen Teils, empfehlen sich zur wiederkehrenden Lektüre.

Versäumen Sie im Forwerts auch nicht "Knowing Why Not To Bomb Iran Is Half the Battle" vom 21. des vergangenen Monats.
