Bei diesem guten John Paul Jones handelt es sich natürlich nicht um den heutzutage auch schon wieder den meisten nicht mehr namentlich bekannten Bassisten und Gelegenheitskeyboarder einer nicht mal so schlechten, etwas veralteten Rockband namens Led Zeppelin. Trotzdem hat auch dieser hier natürlich einen Wikipedia Eintrag, der in Google allerdings und selbstverständlich hinter dem von JPJ/LZ kommt.

Was einen ehemaligen Sklaventransportersteuermann, der im zarten Alter von 21 zum Kapitän befördert wurde und als Vater der US-Navy gilt, für die algerische Seefahrt interessierte, war folgendes: Die Amis hatten bei ihrer Rebellion gegen das britische Vaterland nicht bedacht, dass sie durch die Unabhängigkeit den Schutz der britischen Flotte für ihre erheblichen mittelmeerischen und westafrikanischen Geschäfte verlieren würden, weswegen ihnen dann nicht wenige Schiffe und Waren einfach von den Marokkanern, Algeriern, Tunesiern und Tripolitanern - wie damals die Libyer hießen - abgenommen wurden. Und nicht nur das: Zusätzlich wurden auch nicht wenige amerikanische Bürger beiderlei Geschlechts von den maghrebinischen Arabern mit einkassiert und der dortigen Sklaverei als Produktivkapital einverleibt.

Dass die britische Flotte dem Ganzen gerne und hämisch zusah und, wie viele vermuteten, diversen arabischen Partnern auch noch Tipps zukommen ließ, versteht sich von selbst.

Die Amis brauchten vergleichsweise lange, um geeignete Maßnahmen zu entwickeln. Aber auch damals waren sie in Sachen Homeland Security schon recht fit.

Yet, in spite of this aggression - real and imagined - the states never once contemplated retaliating against the pirates. Apart from banishing three Virginan Jews on spurious charges of spying for North Africa, America remained passive.^*

Beide Zitate sind aus Michael B. Orens "Power Faith and Fantasy", einem 2007 erschienenen und 2008 von der Redaktion hier erworbenen Machwerk, das auf vielen Seiten einen Überblick zu den Beziehungen Nordamerikas zum sogenannten "Mittleren Osten" zu geben versucht. Ziemlich gut, das Buch. Definitely recommended reading.

Catenet, November 1981, Birthday of THE INTERNET

The collection of interconnected networks is called the ARPA Internet (sometimes called the "Catenet").

The Department of Defense has recently adopted the internet concept and the IP and TCP protocols in particular as DoD wide standards for all DoD packet networks, and will be transitioning to this architecture over the next several years.

RFC 801 edited by Jon Postel describes a transition plan from NCP to TCP (Network Control Program to Transport Control Protocol, formerly Program).

The General Plan ------------- The goal is to make a complete switch over from the NCP to IP/TCP by 1 January 1983.

It is the task of each host organization to implement IP/TCP for its own hosts. This implementation task must begin by 1 January 1982. .... It is not enough to implement the IP/TCP protocols, the principal services must be available on this IP/TCP base as well. The principal services are: Telnet, File Transfer, and Mail.

If they did it half right then the 1^st of January 2008 would be the 25^th birthday of the real internet.

From a cinema art piece I saw yesterday, where - contrasting the United States of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics - you could hear Vice President Richard Nixon say to Senator John F. Kennedy :

And it was true in 1959 and is not quite but nearly still true in 2007. The main difference being that the USSR is now the RFSR.
