Experience

I experienced a classic of web authoring as so often reported by the Felsbach herd last night. Wrote a pretty long introduction piece on the third bubble. In the meantime my session had timed out. Done and gone.

Now the problem is even worse for the casual writer who interrupts her work when an idea comes up. Concentration is needed for the writing, not using the app.

This problem has yet to be solved in a secure and user friendly fashion, no matter what our scepticism.

Spawn of Satan has migrated to here.

I hate it!

happened to me too a lot. I'm now more prudent, editing longer texts in an external editor and than pasting it into the form.

Possible remedies: Longer session timeouts (default on Hop is half an hour, although it sometimes feels more like 10 minutes to me), or encoding some kind of credentials (like a secure hash of the username/password) into the post formular. But that doesn't really cut it, and it compromises security (imagine you leave a post form open in a browser).

So the real solution would be: If an anomymous user tries to post a story for which authentication is required, tell him his session probably timed out and he has to log in again. While doing this, take the posting along in hidden form fields. As soon as the user is logged in, post the story.

Now I know this is hard and takes incredible inner strength, but would you mind re-writing the third bubble piece? It does have a pro side, because texts usually get better the second time around (just like software). (Refactor we must.)

I agree AND

i promise.

Agree i do with your approach. just this morning i discussed it with Tom and Manfred and local hidden caching is just about the way to go.

Promise i do to rewrite the bubble peace sometime today.

would be great

Both of hns' ideas are fabulous. First: The second draft IS almost always better than the first (glorified more often than not only in memory). Second: It IS enervating, when texts "suddenly" disappear just because you forgot time. But I assure you that power websys users acquire an automatism and regularly pressing the save-button doesn't really interrupt creativity anymore. Still, if it wouldn't happen, I'd be v. glad.

Lesson learned the hard way...

...after lines and pages of lost text in authoring & webmail systems, i always copy the text to the clipboard before submitting it.

(me, I'm always the one for a quick workaround)

Quick workaround

is righteous but: tends to become tedious the way righteousness becomes so often.

Remember the righteous judge from the Liang Shang Po?
