On The Harm That Is Done By Big And Small Weapons

Freeman Dyson published "Weapons and Hope" in 1984, some years from the peaceful collapse of the Soviet Union. Among many other interesting things it pleads for the continuation of disarmament.

When Mr. Dyson gave this interview things had changed a lot. After the end of the cold war, people who decide that armies should go somewhere and change things or keep them the same, where using smaller arms and an assortment of humanely or automatically driven vehicles to continuously kill lots of people, most of them unnecessarily.

Of course since the time of the interview things have changed a lot again and it turns out that the Russian Empire that had always stayed in the heart of the leaders and many civil and military servants of the Soviet Union, just a wee bit hidden behind internationalist phrases, did not go away at all and still likes to resort to violence when it phantasizes that something or someone threatens its elites and rulers.

Goes a long way to show that it was not communism that made the Soviet Union aggressive at times but also quite nicely proves that communism does little to nothing to tame an already aggressive bear.
