Wenn der Chefredakteur einer sogenannten Qualitätstageszeitung keine Ahnung von den sogenannten digitalen Medienmärkten hat und die Denkfigürchen aus den Konsumentensteuerungszeitschriften, die er vielleicht ja sogar selber liest mit den Erfolgstricks realer Player verwechselt, dann passieren wunderbare Sachen. Diese Zeitung veröffentlicht in der Sonntagsausgabe die Einzelabrufzahlen ihrer quantitativ erfolgreichsten Onlineartikel und man bekommt 3 bis 10 natürliche Zahlen, die man in seine unvollständigen medienökonomischen Modelle einspeisen kann.

Wenn dann einer seiner Konkurrenten, der Herausgeber einer sogenannten Erfolgszeitung, der augenscheinlich bezüglich des weltweiten Web noch ein Stück ahnungsloser ist als der oben genannte Chefredakteur und sein Vorstandsvorsitzender aus lauter männlicher post midlife crisis competitiveness das Gleiche tut, dann bekommt man weitere 10 Datenpunkte und kann kleine Urteile abgeben.

Ich kann Euch deswegen hiermit mitteilen, dass weder die Onlineausgabe der Presse noch die von Österreich bislang über das Schülerzeitungsstadium hinausgekommen sind und dass diese Medien zudem systemisch ganz und gar nicht kostendeckend sind und es nicht so bald werden können.

Die Top 3 erfolgreichen Artikel der Onlinepresse bringen bei Vollauslastung vielleicht so je 35 Euro (freundlich gerechnet) Umsatz. Bei Österreich liegt das an der Spitze vielleicht bei 50 Euro und fällt darunter dafür schneller ab. Die Vermarktung der jeweiligen Startseite kann das so oder so nicht kompensieren. Da versteht man denn auch, warum die Verleger so panisch sind.

Was ihnen aber eine Verschärfung des Copyrights bei der Behebung dieses Problems bringen soll, darauf ist leider noch niemand gekommen. Selber werden sie's ja schon wissen. Irgendwann werden sie damit auch herausrücken müssen. Dann wird das Gelächter erst wirklich los gehen.

And now for something not so completely different:

Internet statistics are still in a nascent state. There are practically no open standards for measuring reach and usage. The figures that are published are nearly completely dictated by commercial and political interest. International figures are not comparable. Large American companies like Comscore and Nielson publish a lot less material than 4 years ago. You need to pay a lot to get those figures.

Amazon's Alexa and Google are really vague about the error margins in their respective international and national rankings. Besides, both are players in the game and as such not very trustworthy as unprejudiced sources. Google does not publish its own figures whereas Alexa publishes Amazon's ranking and relative reach. There are clues that local Google offices are allowed to trim the figures of their close competition. There are large differences and contradications between these two ranking lists.

Someone should start to build a model to be able to at least reasonably interpret the figures we have. If not, all statements about the development of digital media, interaction between them and directions will stay mythical and interest driven. Just to know that US newspapers are shutting down by the tens and hundreds and to know that Austria is said to have one of the highest media concentrations in the developed world is not precise enough to even form competent judgement of the situation.

Let's makae a start and discuss the base parameters and have a framework for rational estimations about what is really going on.

In the meantime I recommend to read commissioner Viviane Reding's speech on Digital Europe – Europe's Fast Track to Economic Recovery, reread the European Publisher's Council's Hamburg Declaration regarding Intellectual Property rights, and also have a look at its signatures list. Out of the Austrian media owners Oscar Bronner has signed that declaration. All these European media policy statement that are brought forth now do stay silent on real quantitative economic and business data which kind of transforms the corpus of them into a sort of marketing myths guided opinion debate.

It's a pity Google does not only understand the digital world thrice as well as the European Carriers and Publishers multiplied by Reding and her office but also speaks the truth, at least partially whereas the Reding office and the EPC both dabble in foma in a really clumsy way. The fact that a number or most of the Austrian players in the field move even far below the rest of Europe and lie clumsier still can be always be examined on derstandard/Etat and Werbeplanung.at but I regret to say that the banana status of our little country does not prove that policy makers in the UK and France are any better informed. Without the facts sophistication is of no avail I fear.
