Catenet, November 1981, Birthday of THE INTERNET

The collection of interconnected networks is called the ARPA Internet (sometimes called the "Catenet").

The Department of Defense has recently adopted the internet concept and the IP and TCP protocols in particular as DoD wide standards for all DoD packet networks, and will be transitioning to this architecture over the next several years.

RFC 801 edited by Jon Postel describes a transition plan from NCP to TCP (Network Control Program to Transport Control Protocol, formerly Program).

The General Plan
-------------
The goal is to make a complete switch over from the NCP to IP/TCP by 1 January 1983.

It is the task of each host organization to implement IP/TCP for its own hosts. This implementation task must begin by 1 January 1982.
....
It is not enough to implement the IP/TCP protocols, the principal services must be available on this IP/TCP base as well. The principal services are: Telnet, File Transfer, and Mail.

If they did it half right then the 1st of January 2008 would be the 25th birthday of the real internet.

The term "catenet" was introduced by Louis Pouzin in 1974 in his early paper on packet network interconnection. The U.S.DARPA research project on this subject has adopted the term to mean roughly "the collection of packet networks which are connected together." This is, however, not a sufficiently explicit definition to determine, for instance, whether a new network is in conformance with the rules for network interconnection which make the catenet function as confederation of co-operating networks. (vint)

some also say, people had problems to pronounce catenet right, so they changed to internet, as they had internetting, internetworking already in their mind.

i am not so sure about the 1st of jan ...yet january 1983 is right. found an old post in my box: "We spent 1978 through 1982 implementing TCP/IP for a score of operating systems and deployed the system on January 1, 1983. As it was, it had taken 10 years of work to get from the concept to the reality of deployment ... vint

so, if iana planned and mandated 1983-01-01 and mr. cerf says they deployed on 1983-01-01 then why not. as good as any and better than most. all these notes show that the guys knew that internet was more of a political than a technical question.

you bet.

Wirklich toll
