Warnung: Der Link hinter EVL ist fast ein Duckroll, er führt nämlich zum Eintrag meines Geburtsjahres im Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (H2G2, bbc.co.uk edition). EVL kommt in dieser Beschreibung aber wirklich vor. Das Lesenswerte dort ist aber eine ziemlich gute Beschreibung der weltberühmten Ereignisse in Little Rock, Arkansas und des Governors Orval Faubus, den mein Musikgott Charles Mingus durch seinen großen Song "Fables of Faubus" irgendwie weltberühmt gemacht hat. Catenet, November 1981, Birthday of THE INTERNET

The collection of interconnected networks is called the ARPA Internet (sometimes called the "Catenet").

The Department of Defense has recently adopted the internet concept and the IP and TCP protocols in particular as DoD wide standards for all DoD packet networks, and will be transitioning to this architecture over the next several years.

The goal is to make a complete switch over from the NCP to IP/TCP by 1 January 1983.

It is the task of each host organization to implement IP/TCP for its own hosts. This implementation task must begin by 1 January 1982.

It is not enough to implement the IP/TCP protocols, the principal services must be available on this IP/TCP base as well. The principal services are: Telnet, File Transfer, and Mail.

If they did it half right then the 1^st of January 2008 would be the 25^th birthday of the real internet.

H & A Blogging rules ok

Die Spatzen haben es schon länger von den Dächern gepiffen. Nach Armin Wolf und Wolfgang Fellner blogggt seit 8 Tagen nun auch Hans Dichand.

Während bei Herrn Wolf gar keine Kommentare möglich sind und die Leserbeiträge bei Fellner eher spärlich ausfallen, stömen sie beim alten Dichand nur so herein: 76 gerade bei seinem letzten Posting. Darin sind auch erstaunliche Dinge zugelassen:
Das Konzept des Herrn Dichand ist einerseits einfach und berechnend, anderererseits verlogen und hinterfotzig, also auf gleichem Niveau wie das unserer Politiker. Wer Herrn Dichand für ehrlich hält dem ist einfach nicht zu helfen. (Franz Hanetseder am 26. November 2007)

Mal sehen, wie länge das hält. Aber wahrscheinlich schreibt eh ED mit einem kleinen Stab Posts und Briefe. Trotzdem beindruckend, relativ gesehen.

Interessant ist auch, dass 2 der 3 Herren mit SW auf helma Basis publizieren. In diesem Feld haben sich helma und antville (v.a. durch sein Stiefkind twoday) einigermaßen durchgesetzt, wie Henso schön zeigt hat. Ich z.B. wusste nicht, dass nach KZ, TA, ORS und vielen anderen im Westen ausgerechnet MSFT A schon assimiliert ist. Resistance is futile!

UTORnet Quagga v 0.96

In Canada they do open source backbone - and edge - routing still. On cheapo intel boxes with Quagga which is a forked child of Zebra.

Here are their Scottish economics

• Cisco Catalyst 3550 cost 13 ~ 30 CDNk$
• Foundry BigIron 4000 cost 12 ~ 20 CDNk$
• Intel 2U Dell 2650 cost 2 ~ 3 CDNk$

Read the whole paper. Funny, like going back to 80ies routing SW (fuzzball) on general purpose cpus, only a lot smaller and cheaper. But then again, CISCO had beta products and no service then an a BBN switching gateway cost $200k.
