Der Economist vom 29. April enthält einen einigermaßen bewundernden aber auch kritischen Artikel über das vielleicht erfolgreichst Unternehmen der Welt: Goldman Sachs.

Even compared with leaders in other industries, Goldman makes spectacular returns. Among its latest record-busting yardsticks was a 40% quarterly return on equity. The average pay-packet of its 24,000 staff last year was $520,000—and that includes a lot of assistants and secretaries.

Das sollte man sich nun lieber in den Hirnwindungen statt auf der Zunge zergehen lassen. Sind diese Leute so tüchtig, haben sie das verdient. Ja, im Rahmen des Systems, denke ich, sind sie so tüchtig und haben sie das verdient. Viele Menschen sind sich darüber einig, dass ein System, das solche Formen des Erfolges ermöglicht, Fehler hat. Über die Behebung dieser wirklichen oder vermeintlichen Fehler sind sie sich schon sehr sehr viel weniger einig.

Wie dem auch sei, der Economist meint:

The real reason why Goldman should matter to outsiders is not because it is a manufacturer of millionaires (good luck to it); but because it stands at the centre of a two-decade-long transformation of the financial markets and a new approach to risk.

Wrestling With The Public Option

In yesterday's story we announced a novel that's probably going to make a lot of money for Random House, one of the gems in Bertelsmann's collection of Media Companies that were aquired by and are still grouped around the profitzbility of their core print, logistic and distribution businesses.

Also yesterday the International Herold Tribune started its business story on the ongoing inside fight about listing or not listing publicly the mostly family owned Bertelsmann group with two success stories from their book and record businesses.

Bertelsmann reported upbeat financial results Wednesday, propelled by pop-culture hits like Kelly Clarkson's vocals and Dan Brown's thriller "The Da Vinci Code." But the media company's most talked-about suspense story continues to be its own.

Bertelsmann's senior executives turned away a barrage of questions at a news conference about how they planned to respond to plans by a minority shareholder, Groupe Bruxelles Lambert, to push for a public listing of this family-owned company, possibly this year.

"I can only say that we are prepared, and we haven't any problem with it at all," said Bertelsmann's chief executive, Gunter Thielen. "Whether we are publicly listed or not, what determines our work on the executive board is that we define the right long-term strategy for Bertelsmann."

The fight comes from past changes in market forces that lead Bertelsmann, one of the large quintessential print based media houses of Europe to strongly diversify into TV, advertisment based free to air television that mainly is. Today, despite Random House and Gruner & Jahr, RTL, their Luxemburg based European TV group with a published value of 9 billion Euros is by far Bertelsmann's most valuable asset.

In the train of aquiring a controlling majority in RTL Group in a large complex swap deal they also aquired their largest outside stockholder, "Groupe Bruxelles Lambert", an investment company with a history going back to the coal in steel days of yore. Bruxelles Lambert of course are keen on bringing their long term investments to fruit and, as Beneluxians having more trust in transparency than the widow led Mohn family seem to have contracted a clause that will allow them to do so in 2007.

Austrian TV managers have played a large and important role in that diversification and the success and profitability of RTL. Helmut Thoma and Gerhard Zeiler are the most well and important of those. On the back of that coin of success is boths' near complete disinterest in the Web as a medium that could be publicly witnessed pretty often in the past. It has been less obvious in the last 5 years than before, but for Zeiler I definitely witnessed this personally over several years.

Bertelsmann's past chief executive Thomas Middelhoff, who negotiated the deal with GBL and got fired over his known opinion on going public (openly) and his extremely mixed track record in the emerging Internet business (large financial success with the investment in and later sale of AOL and complete defeat in building up substantial media and ecommerce businesses on the web) nevertheless seems to have been Bertelsmann's single top manager with a substantial interest in the Internet and IPO capital aquisition.

Now it will be match between Belgian billionaire Albert Frère (quite old), the guiding man of GBL and Liz Mohn (widow), the chair of the Bertelsmann Stiftung, who has already announced the replacement of Mr. Thielen as the CEO of BG in January next year.

Now, we take bets on the following questions:

• Who's going to win the fight, Liz or Albert?
• Who's going to be Liz' new darling at the top of BG?

Thielen said Bertelsmann would achieve a 10 percent return on sales by 2007, when he is scheduled to retire as chief executive. The company, he said, will announce his successor in January or February next year, probably from its executive board.

The listing of Bertelsmann would rank among the largest in Germany's history.

Music For Airports
Toller Tag heute: um 10:25 wird mein 11:15 Flug nach Kopenhagen annulliert. Ich gehe frühstücken und lasse die Geschäftspartner von der verspäteten Ankunft informieren. Kein Problem. Sie wollen verkaufen, nicht kaufen. Manchmal ist man ja selbst der Customer und dann eben auch gerne King.

Ich fliege um 13:15 (in Wahrheit 13:40) nach Düsseldorf mit Tyrolian im Auftrag von Lufthansa und komme da auch gut an. Die Verpflegung besteht aus Tee mit Diabetikerzucker und Coffeewhitener aka Magermilchpulver. Dazu gibt's ein Lachsbaguettchen und ein Sackerl Erdnüsse um 5 + 1€. Irgendwie haben die McKinseys die Passagierfliegerbranche bescheuert beraten. Bei den Zeitungen sparen sie nicht. Die ganz dünnen Tribunes und Weltausgaben, die gibt es immer noch. Hat das keiner im Excel hinbekommen, dass dieses Kleingeld irgendwo untergebracht oder vielleicht dem Reinigungspersonal bei der nächsten Verhandlung vom Gehalt abgezogen werden kann?

Dieser letzte klare Gedanke bringt mich wieder zu den Abflugmonitoren in Düsseldorf. Alle Flüge nach K., die in Wien noch gut waren, d.h. alle des restlichen Tages sind canceled. Was bin ich nur für ein Depp. Ohne Fragen in Wien davon ausgegangen, dass mein Liniendirektflug wegen Kälte ... Die Piloten der SAS streiken und die operieren, wie man heute sagt, diese Flüge in die Länder des Schnees.

An dieser Stelle hilft nur noch eines. Wenn man, wie ich, einen digitalen Lärmmacher dabei hat, sind die eigene Seele und die empfindlichen Ohren der Damen hier an den Schaltern so gut wie gerettet. Gewalt ist eben keine Lösung. Erstklassige Drittparteienkopfhörer dagegen schon.

Und nun: Alles dabei. Umbuchen nach Frankfurt, 1 Termin absagen, 1 auf morgen verschieben. Ab in die Airportbar, und, damit ich mich nicht zu sehr beruhige, 1 Espresso und 2 Pall Mall. Schon wieder 50/20*2 Cents gespart. Raus mit dem Schlep auf den Lap und noch schnell das Companyblog updaten.

Ja, ja, so ein Business Executive wie ich hat's nicht leicht. Nur blöd, dass hier in DüDo nur das beschränkt-bescheuerte Vodafone Eierlan funkt. Ohne Mobilnummer von denen is nix mit Internetz. Komm egal, ist doch eh nur noch Streaming. Da ist man wieder froh, dass man einen FatClient mit lokaler Saftware hat. Wäre ich jetzt aufgeschmissen mit Writely oder sonst einem tollen Webservice! Vielleicht geht's ja in Krankfurt besser und ich kann das noch einchecken. Hier ist ja Provinz. Immerhin kann ich das WalledGardenPortl vom Airport (eher doch Flugplatz) nach den besten Shops durchforsten. Brauch ja noch Bestechungsgeschenke für die Lieben. Nur, wenn ich an diesen Hilfigergeschäften vorbei muss, da wird mir immer schlecht.

Um 21:30 werd' ich in K. sein und nach einer halbstündigen Taxifahrt im King Kong Hotel (kleiner Scherz) einchecken. Ist natürlich das Kong Arthur Hotel. Dänen lügen nicht, aber ich bin noch ehrlicher. Und doch hintergründig, wurde J.H. sagen, wie's sich für einen Ösi gehört. Und davon haben die fleissigen Calvinisten und Lutheraner im nördlichen Europa noch nicht viel gehört. Ist nämlich verboten bei denen.

Ich muss weiter, Freunde, hat mich gefreut. Muss schnell noch das Managermagazin für den nächsten Flug besorgen. Weil noch so eine langatmige Frankfurter oder Welt, das pack ich nicht. Nichts für ungut. Man sieht sich.

update: In Fränkfört gibt es die teemobilee, nix ohne Nummer und einen Heissfleck der Lufthansa: 5€ für 24h, wollen die mich beleidigen. Wer, wos des braucht, ist 24h am Flughafen. Ab mit Dir, LH, in den 101 Grundkurs "Preisgestaltung". Der Aufenthalt ist zum Glück sehr kurz auf diesem Monster hier. Ich bin nämlich doch mit dem späteren Flug hierher, weil ich noch ordentlich essen gehen musste. Nur dass ich Eno's Musik For Airports nicht mithabe, ärgert mich jetzt. Kommt sofort auf die 2/3 Zoll Festplatte, wenn ich zurück bin. Versprochen! Und Great Jewish Music von Burt Bacharach. Da kann ich, schätze ich mal so, zwischendurch bei der nächsten Reise in Bielefeld oder Göteborg sogar ein Nickerchen machen.

update: Im Winter und in der Nacht und aus der Luft sehen alle Städte hübsch aus, mit ihrem Glow und ihren orangen Adern, besonders aber solche, zu denen man übers Meer kommt. Kopenhagen macht da keine Ausnahme. Jetzt noch mit dem Helsingör-Express in die Stadt, einen kleinen Imbiss einnehmen, den Entspannungssoftporno durchchecken, im Hotel dafür sorgen, dass morgen nicht peinlicherweise "Harry Potter II" auf der Rechnung steht und dann Heia. Und das alles, während zuhause die Webservices ordentlich Traffic und Geld machen. Honni soit qui mal y pense.

Gesamte Reisezeit von Wohnung zu Hotel: 13 Stunden. Hat Spass gemacht. plink, nix    praise or blame!

Triple Play again
I really and definitely did not want to doo and link this but on second thouhgt I have to because this should be wellknown. On Dec 1 05 Mr. Cringeley was not only informed (which he very often is very much) but also put on a real analytical demonstration practically without any of the frequent confoundments. Allthough I will quote from this article now, it is highly recommended to read the whole thing twice and take it serious.

These concepts like IPTV and triple play (voice, data, audio-video) are heroic and scary -- so scary that the smart money is staying out of that game completely. We're talking billions and billions of dollars in new infrastructure, at least half of which will be ultimately a waste of money. Yet if you are a cable television company or a phone company in America, this is what you do. You spend tens of billions of dollars on infrastructure to better deliver SpongeBob SquarePants.
   and the conclusion:
Who is going to win the triple play? It doesn't matter. Who is going to win the game? Any player with deep pockets and no particular technological dependency. At this point that could be Yahoo or Microsoft or AOL or some new player altogether, but it probably means Google.

Triple Play is important because it still appeals to many in the industry and it means the largest sums of capital (maybe not the smartest money but there is enough less smart money around) to be invested into communications systems over the next years will go there. And, if there was one, larges sums of IB (investment bank), VC (venture capital), SE (stock exchange) and EP (european public) money constitute a contingent large reality distortion field that will draw and manipulate many people.

Now what Cringeley did here was not really hard to deduce, but it was well structured, focused and quite correct in its probability weighing.

To have something to say myself I'll take a prediction risk now: Google's relative dominance will probably last until 2017. I'll be old then but I'll live to see the end of it. Amen!
