In private and professional life to be able to say No is a very important thing.

William Ury is a negotiations expert at Harvard and has done a very good job to structure the problem and give practical advice not only how to do it but also to found the right way of doing it.

Hier kommt, wie versprochen, das erste Zitat aus den erwähnten Büchlein mit Texten von Adolf Loos. Man beachte, dass das größtenteils vor dem ersten Weltkrieg geschrieben worden ist.

Gut gekleidet sein, wer möchte das nicht? Unser Jahrhundert hat mit den Kleiderordnungen aufgeräumt und jedem steht das Recht zu, sich wie der König anzuziehen. Als Gradmesser für die Kultur eines Staates kann der Umstand gelten, wie viele seiner Einwohner von dieser freiheitlichen Errungenschaft Gebrauch machen. In England und Amerika alle, in den Balkanländern nur die oberen Zehntausend. Und in Österreich? Ich wage dese Frage nicht zu beantworten.

Seit damals hat sich doch nicht wenig getan. Allem voran ist sichtbar geworden, wie sehr anders sich durchschnittliche Amerikaner heute anziehen als vor hundert Jahren.

Tián Mì Mì

Im obigen Bild kann sehr schön nachvollzogen werden, dass die chinesische Schrift wirklich nichts mit Klang zu tun hat. In lateinischer Umschrift (pinyin) werden diese drei Zeichen als "tian mi mi" transkribiert.

Dass so eine Schrift sowohl über die Zeit als auch über den Raum andere Effekte hat als das Alphabet leuchtet ein. Irgendwie.

Es handelt sich übrigens um einen sehr schönen Film, "Almost love story", ~~was wahrscheinlich oder mindesten möglicherweise auch das ist, was die drei Schriftzeichen "bedeuten"~~.

Den Titel bezieht der Film, wenn ich mich recht erinnere von einem populären Song, der in der auf Single gepressten Interpretation von Teresa Teng eine Rolle im Film spielt.

Addendum: Solche Vermutungen im WWW zu recherchieren ist ja leicht und bequem, darum hier gleich die Korrektur. Tián mì mì wird mit "very sweet" übersetzt. Der Song ist typischer süßlicher 80er Jahre Hongkong Pop und kann natürlich auf youtube komsumiert werden. Ausgesprochen wird tián übrigens "tjen".

Vorvorgestern habe ich zwei ganz neu herausgekommene Büchlein gekauft.

Beide beinhalten feuilletonistische Beiträge von
Adolf Loos. Sie haben, offensichtlich von den Herausgebern ausgedacht, die wunderbaren Titel "Wie man eine Wohnung einrichtet" und "Warum man als Mann gut angezogen sein muss".

Über das zweite Thema habe ich dann noch am gleichen Tag gleichzeitig mit einer Dame und einem Herrn bei einem sehr guten Rotwein eine lustige und angenehme Unterhaltung gehabt.

Beim Schmökern fällt auf den ersten Blick gleich auf, wie sehr sich das kulturelle Paradigma seit damals geändert hat. Selbst wenn Herr Loos etwas sagt, was man heute noch ok findet, illustriert er das mit sehr anderen Bildern als er das heute tun würde.

Anderseits haben sich bei einigen Dingen die von ihm damals wahrscheinlich sehr zurecht herbeigesehnten Zustände in einem Maß durchgesetzt und sich andererseits bedauerte Zustände so sehr verflüchtigt, dass man den Abgrund, den ein Jahrhundert bedeuten kann, richtig schön stark spürt.

Ich denke, ich werde die geneigte Leserschaft in den nächsten Tagen mit ein paar netten Zitaten zu erfreuen oder wenigstens zu amüsieren versuchen. Nicht zu viel. Ich verspreche es.

Wunderbare Poesie zum Ende der arbeitsfreien Zeit und dem immer wieder beginnenden Anfang der Leiden und Anstrengungen. Die Sophistikation liegt darin, dass niemand die Anführungszeichen sprechen oder singen kann.

Unserem Chorleiter Roman Grinberg ist ein außerordentlich schönes Arrangement gelungen. Macht Spass und fühlt sich sehr gut an.

Randy Newman is the first artist here that gets a second exposure. He maintains (or probably has it maintained) a nice if maybe a little boring blog styled website with all his lyrics and webcasts of quite a lot of parts of live performances. Many of those lyrics are very nice and so are the performances. It's mostly in RealMedia, which is a pity. Old fart stuff but so is he and so are we. Amen.

For a while I'll be done now with English lyrics that I am obsessed with a bit as I do not hesitate to admit. I shall take a bit more of trying on me and republish some German and Yiddish poetry here in this column. If you take a liking to this, read my lips. Still, i shall remain adamant in that I don't want no short people here.

Let's start with the "Hora Cosmica".

Gestern haben wir im schon öfter erwähnten Ostklub Zdob[si]Zdub (Make a drum sound) gesehen. Diese Jungs rund um den Sänger Roman Yagubov kennen alles, verwurschten alles und können auch noch super spielen. Der Klub war so voll wie noch nie, wenn wir dort waren. Gelungene Konzerte sind einfach ein biggest fun. Yeah. Check this wedding video.
